Slovenia National Day 2020

  • Commemorating 29 years of independence, today’s Doodle celebrates Slovenia National Day. Known locally as Statehood Day, or Dan državnosti, June 25th marks the day in 1991 when Slovenia gained freedom from the former European state known as Yugoslavia.
Located in central Europe, Slovenia is home to abundant natural beauty, including the snow-capped mountain peaks of the Julian Alps, picturesque beaches on the Adriatic Sea, and the idyllic Lake Bled. A wealth of restored castles, fortresses, and manors built during the medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque periods fill the region and tell the story of the Slovenian landscape’s unique past. Many of these historical treasures are open to visitors, such as the 13th-century Predjama Castle, which boasts the world record for the largest castle constructed in the entrance to a cave.
Illustrated in the Doodle artwork, the white, blue, and red Slovenian flag can be seen waving proudly across the country today in honor of its independence and national pride.
    Happy Dan državnosti!
