2019 Women's World Cup - Day 5

The 2019 Women’s World Cup is underway! Over the next month, players from the national teams of 24 countries will compete, with the final match in the biggest Women’s World Cup yet taking place on July 7th in Lyon, France.

We’re celebrating the eighth edition of the tournament with a series of Doodles by guest artists representing each of the competing countries to capture the local excitement of the competition, as well as what the event means to them personally.

Q: What does ⚽mean to you personally?

Chile – Luisa Rivera

A: It means teamwork, passion, and determination. Also, football represents a moment of sharing and unity, because it is a space where everyone gathers to celebrate and cheer.

Netherlands – Eline Van Dam

A: It connects people all over the world.

New Zealand – Phoebe Morris

A: Football means friends and family gathering to squawk support for their team, be it at a playing field or television screen. I picture my Kiwi grandfather dressed in black and white while my Australian grandmother sits defiantly next to him wearing green and gold.

Sweden – Sara Andreasson

A: Personally, I’ve never supported any particular team, other than the national ones of course, nor did I ever play football myself. But I love seeing the game bring people of all walks of life together — especially during tournaments.

Thailand – Banana Blah Blah

A: Football is fun and easy to watch with your friends. It's exciting cheering your favorite football player while he or she is playing, and sometimes unexpected things happen! Also, football players have to practice hard for the best result. Seeing how earnestly they strive to reach a goal inspires me.

USA – Roxie Vizcarra

A: Personally, I think football (soccer) is the world’s most unifying sport. It’s like a language that so many cultures around the world seem to speak and can use to find common ground.
