In recognition of 58 years of sovereignty for the largest country in Africa, today’s Doodle celebrates Algeria’s Independence Day.
Following a conflict against colonial rule and a referendum that showed nearly unanimous support, Algeria gained its independence on July 3rd, 1962. The hardships overcome during this tumultuous period of the nation’s history ultimately united the Algerian people.
The country officially celebrates this holiday two days later on July 5th, the anniversary of the initial French invasion in 1830. The Algerian flag, depicted in today’s Doodle, reminds Algerians across the country of their fight for freedom.
