Belarus Independence Day 2020

  • Today’s Doodle celebrates Belarus’ Independence Day in honor of the liberation of its capital of Minsk from German occupation on this date in 1944. While the country officially declared sovereignty from the Soviet Union on July 27th, 1990, Belarus chose in 1996 to move the holiday to July 3rd to commemorate this crucial turning point in the history of the Eastern European nation.
On this day, from Brest to Vitsyebsk, Belarusians proudly fly their nation’s flag, depicted in today’s Doodle artwork. Adopted in 1995, the flag features uneven horizontal stripes of red and green, and on the left a thin embroidered pattern in red and white, which symbolizes the country’s vibrant cultural tradition.
This year, you can’t go wrong by celebrating Belarus’ diverse history through some of the country’s classic cuisine. Among the most popular traditional dishes are machanka, a pork stew, and draniki, thick pancakes made of one of Belarus’ most essential ingredients: potatoes.
    Happy Independence Day, Belarus!
