Norway Constitution Day 2020

  • Today’s Doodle commemorates Norway Constitution Day on the 17th of May, or as it's known by Norwegians: 17. Mai. On this day in 1814, the Norwegian Constituent Assembly signed their constitution at what is now widely considered one of Norway’s most symbolic markers of national pride, the Eidsvoll Manor House, officially beginning its path to total independence.
Celebrated annually since 1836, Constitution Day is often kicked off by many Norwegians whipping up a traditional 17. Mai breakfast of smoked salmon, scrambled eggs, and a fresh loaf of bread, washed down with a bubbly glass of champagne. Breakfast is just the start of the spring holiday that many view as a time to indulge in guilty food pleasures, especially ice cream and hot dogs.
Depicted in the Doodle artwork, the Norwegian flag—featuring an indigo blue Nordic cross outlined in white against a red background—flies proudly in honor of Constitution Day. The flag of Norway is a reflection of the Scandinavian country’s deep historical roots, adopted in its current form in 1821.
    Gratulerer med dagen, Norge!
