Jordan Independence Day 2020

  • Today’s Doodle celebrates Jordan’s Independence Day and 74 years of freedom. On this date in 1946, the country now known as the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan became a sovereign nation.
The Middle Eastern country is home to one of the new seven wonders of the world, the abandoned lost city of ancient Petra. Tucked deep within a winding network of desertified sandstone canyons, what is now the Petra Archaeological Park was once the bustling trade center and capital city of the prehistoric Nabataean empire, which dates back to 400 BCE. Petra was declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1985, and its monuments serve as a time capsule for one of the world’s oldest cities.
Illustrated in the Doodle artwork, the flag of Jordan features the traditional pan-Arab colors of crimson, black, green, and white with a seven-pointed star that symbolizes the unity and strength of the Jordanian people.
    Happy Eid al-Istiklaal!
