Panama Independence Day 2019

  • Today’s Doodle celebrates Panama’s Independence Day, also known as Separation Day. On this day in 1903, Panama broke ties with “Gran Colombia” after many years, leading to the construction of the Panama Canal. This major event marks the beginning of a month-long observance known as fiestas patrias.
The Central American nation celebrates four other major holidays in November—Flag Day on the 4th, Colon Day on the 5th, “the First Cry of Independence” on the 10th, and finally, full independence from Spanish rule, which Panama achieved on November 28, 1821.
As befits such an occasion, there will be grand parades and fireworks, but also couples in traditional attire doing the national dance El Tamborito (“The Little Drum”). Flying everywhere will be the red, white, and blue Bandera de Panamá, designed in 1903 by the future First Lady of Panama, María de la Ossa de Amador, who’s sometimes referred to as the Mother of the Nation.
¡Felices Fiestas Y Que Viva Panamá!
