In both prehistory and recorded history, Tunisia is a historical hotspot. Tools from the Middle Stone Age (around 200,000years ago) have been unearthed near Kelibia, and the area was permanently settled at least 5000 years ago. Within its borders are seven Cultural World Heritage Sites, evidence of the empires that rose and fell over the millennia.
The modern Republic of Tunisia has been an independent nation since March 20, 1956. Today, the day is marked by government speeches and parades, and some local leaders lay wreaths in tribute. For many, it’s a day of remembrance and gratitude.
Today’s Doodle depicts the Tunisian Flag with its star and crescent design that reflects the country’s History as part of the Ottoman Empire.
