Doodle 4 Google 2018 - US Winner

Over the last decade, we’ve been privileged to receive hundreds of thousands of submissions for our annual Doodle for Google contest—submissions that reflect the dreams, hopes, and talents of students across the country. For our 10th year, we asked students to respond to the theme “What inspires me…” and received Doodles depicting everything from a love of family and food to a passion for intergalactic roller coasters!
Today, we’re thrilled to share the work of our 2018 Doodle for Google winner on the US Google homepage: 2nd grader Sarah Gomez-Lane, who drew delightful dinosaurs to highlight her dream of becoming a paleontologist! We fell in love with Sarah’s rendering of her dinos, and were blown away by her big (you might even say “dino-sized”!) ambitions for her future, especially at her young age.
For the first time in Doodle for Google’s 10-year history, Sarah got to collaborate with the Doodle team to transform her artwork into an animated, interactive experience. She also received $30,000 toward a college scholarship, and her elementary school in Falls Church, VA will receive $50,000 to spend on technology to help students like Sarah continue to pursue what inspires them.
Huge thanks to our talented 2018 winners and everyone else who has shared their creativity with us over the last ten years. From all of us at Google: keep dreaming—and keep doodling!

For your own chance to be a Doodle for Google winner, head over to doodle4google.com to enter your submission before the contest closes on March 18th!
Our guest judges this year are none other than Jimmy Fallon, the host of “The Tonight Show”, Kermit the Frog, and the 2018 National Teacher of the Year, Mandy Manning. Kermit dropped by “The Tonight Show” to ring in the new year with his fellow judge, Jimmy and celebrate the contest opening for submissions. Here's what they had to say.

Fahrelnissa Zeid’s 118th Birthday

“I am a descendent of four civilizations,” wrote Fahrelnissa Zeid, describing her 1980 self-portrait Someone from the Past. “The hand is Persian, the dress Byzantine, the face is Cretan and the eyes Oriental, but I was not aware of this as I was painting it.”
One of the first women to attend art school in Turkey, Fahrelnissa Zeid went on to become a member of both the École de Paris (School of Paris) and D Grubu, a Turkish avant-garde group. Celebrated for her abstract paintings, Zeid also did representational work and even painted designs on chicken bones. Bridging western abstraction and eastern styles, her work broke down gender and culture barriers.
Born on the Turkish island of Büyükada on this day in 1901, Zeid was raised in a prestigious Ottoman family. In 1919 she enrolled at the Imperial School of Art in Istanbul, later traveling through Europe and visiting a variety of art and cultural sites across Spain, Italy, and more.. She continued her training at Académie Ranson in Paris.
In the 1930s, Zeid married into the royal family of Iraq and moved to Berlin until World War II forced her to move to Baghdad.  “I did not ‘intend’ to become an abstract painter,” she said of the bold abstract paintings she began painting between Baghdad, Turkey, Paris, and London—blending Eastern and Western influences.
In the  1970s Zeid moved to Amman, Jordan, where she founded the Fahrelnissa Zeid Institute for Fine Arts . A 2017 retrospective of her work at the Tate Modern in London referred to Zeid as “one of the greatest female artists of the 20th century.”
Happy Birthday, Fahrelnissa Zeid!

New Year's Eve 2018

A mammoth pile of balloons? Check. A ton of  party hats? Check. A herd of friends and family ready to countdown? Check. Let the New Year’s Eve festivities commence! At the stroke of midnight, it’s out with the old and in with the new. We’ll sing that song “Should old acquaintance be forgot,” but there’s no need to worry about our purple friends. Elephants never forget.
Happy New Year’s Eve!
