Sri Lanka Independence Day 2020

  • Today’s Doodle pays tribute to Sri Lanka’s Independence Day and celebrates its 72 years as an independent republic. On this day in 1948, the island state in the Indian Ocean declared its sovereignty from Great Britain.
A day of parades and patriotism, Independence Day begins with the raising of the country’s multicolored flag, featuring a gold lion with a sword in hand. The design of the flag has its roots in the legend of the founder of Sri Lanka, Prince Vijaya from Sinhapura (“Lion City”), India. The lion stands in a crimson square surrounded by four leaves of the bo tree, which symbolize the four Buddhist virtues of joy, kindness, compassion, and equanimity. The orange and green vertical stripes represent the island’s Hindu and Muslim communities.
The nation’s capital of Colombo is the center for the holiday celebrations that include a presidential address, cultural performances, and traditional music. Sri Lankans often enjoy regional foods such as hoppers, lamprais, or kothu while spending time with friends and family in recognition of the country’s national pride.
    Happy Independence Day, Sri Lanka!
