Croatia Independence Day 2019

  • Today’s Doodle depicts the red, white, and blue Croatian flag with the national coat of arms in the center. These colors will be seen flying all over the country in honor of Croatia’s Independence Day, known locally as Dan neovisnosti.
On this day in 1991, the Croatian parliament decided to end all relations with Yugoslavia. The decision followed a national referendum, in which more than 90% of the population voted for independence.
Celebrated for the first time in 2002, Independence Day is marked by a military parade in the capital city of Zagreb. Most major cities, including Dubrovnik on the Adriatic seaside, host a fireworks display. Many families gather for a private barbecue featuring traditional delicacies.
Croatian cuisine varies widely from one region to the next—the Dalmatian and Istrian dishes feature seafood, while Slavonia specializes in pork seasoned with paprika, while Zagreb features central European staples like meat, cabbage, and potatoes. Many people enjoy fritule, a fried pastry flavored with raisins, citrus rinds, and rum.
    Happy Independence Day, Croatia!
