Chile National Day 2019

  • Today’s Doodle depicts the third Chilean flag, which has been the country’s official flag since 1817. Every September all over the country, the flag is proudly hoisted by Chileans as a symbol of Fiestas Patrias celebrations. On this day in 1810, Chile celebrated the First National Government Board Assembly, which started the process of independence from Spanish colonial rule and began an eight-year struggle for sovereignty.
The start of a multi-day celebration, known as Las Fiestas Patrias, is marked by parties that proudly reflect Chilean huaso culture, the local term for cowboys. Seasonal fairs known as fondas take place in outdoor ramadas where plenty of empanadas and anticuchos (or shish kabobs) are served along with cups of chicha. Traditional activities include kite-flying competitions, climbing a greased pole, and the national cueca dance. September 19th is the day to celebrate the Glories of the Army with a great military parade, usually held in Santiago’s O’Higgins Park.
    Felices Fiestas Patrias!
