Bolivia Independence Day 2019

Today’s Doodle celebrates Día de la Patria, also known as Bolivian Independence Day, commemorating the South American country’s transition from a Spanish colony to a sovereign republic. On this day in 1825, a constitutional congress was convened to rename the land formerly known as “Upper Peru,” after the national hero and liberator Simon Bolivar.

The tricolor flag seen in the Doodle was adopted in 1851, its red band representing the bravery of those who struggled for freedom, its yellow band symbolizing the country’s rich natural resources, and its green band standing for Bolivia’s lush, unspoiled beauty. 

Preparations for the two-day celebration begin weeks in advance. School children, labor unions, representatives of Bolivia’s diverse indigenous communities, public officials, and members of the military parade through the streets, accompanied by marching bands and flags. Street dances, gun salutes, and fireworks also mark the festive occasion, centering around Casa de la Libertad in the capital city of Sucre. 

Many citizens proudly don traditional clothing including bowler hats, shawls, and pollera. The sounds of traditional instruments such as the stringed charango and quena flute can be heard all throughout, and savory pastries known as salteñas are served in La Recoleta Plaza.
