Cambodia Independence Day 2018

Today’s Doodle honors Cambodia, the Southeast Asian nation known for its tropical rainforests and ancient temples. On this date in 1953, Cambodia declared independence from France, and now the anniversary is celebrated throughout the country.
In the capital city Phnom Penh, King Norodom Sihamoni begins the day in ceremonial fashion by visiting the independence monument on Norodom Boulevard. Surrounded by bouquets of flowers, he lights a candle in honor of those who fought for Cambodia’s independence. In the evening, there is a fireworks show is displayed in the river in front of the royal palace.
In most towns, the Cambodian flag is prominently displayed. Symbolizing national pride in Cambodian history, the flag depicts Angkor Wat, the stone temple with intricate architecture dating back to the Khmer Empire.
Happy National Day, Cambodia!
