Doodle Snow Games - Day 13

Welcome to Day 13 of the Doodle Snow Games! On this brrr-eezy day in PyeongChang, we're joined by athletes from all over the world hoping to prove themselves best in class (or species).
Let’s follow Magpie for a fluttering glimpse of today’s action...
No stone was left unturned earlier today in tracking down speed skating legend Millipede, the fastest arthropod in any number of segments.
The down-to-earth skater had this to say. “Sure, it takes hours, but I put on my skates like anyone else: curled up on the ground to reach ‘em all. Although I do have 998 more reasons to trip, so I quadruple-knot the laces.”
Last time, Millipede won by just 1000th of a second. Will cousin and arch rival Centi im-pede Milli’s attempt at scoring a refeet victory?

Doodle Snow Games - Day 12

Welcome to Day 12 of the Doodle Snow Games! On this brrr-eezy day in PyeongChang, we're joined by athletes from all over the world hoping to prove themselves best in class (or species).
Let’s follow Magpie to the slopes for a fluttering glimpse of today’s action
Today we're up in the mountains to watch Flying Squirrel complete the ski jump. Bucking tradition, our toothsome furry friend has a big advantage in this event, but it wal-nut be a runaway.
With great powder comes great responsibility, and many in the crowd are depending on Flying Squirrel to sleigh this jump. As Flying Squirrel takes the leap, everyone cranes their head to see this small but mighty critter soar through the air. This ski-son has been full of sleet competitors, so there's just snow telling who will take frost place. In a nutshell, it looks like Flying Squirrel's got this event by the tail!
We caught up with our friend after the event, who had this to say: “It's been a long rodent to get here, with a lot of tuft competition, but in the end it was my fans' support that lifted me up to make the winning jump.”

Doodle Snow Games - Day 11

Welcome to Day 11 of the Doodle Snow Games! On this brrr-eezy day in PyeongChang, we're joined by athletes from all over the world hoping to prove themselves best in class (or species).
Let’s follow Magpie to the slopes for a fluttering glimpse of today’s action…
Get ready for the skeleton competition, the bones of which are racing headfirst down an icy track on an itty-bitty sled. Once Beetle finishes practicing the frozen shot put and scurries off the field, we’ll get the ball ro--wait, not literally!

...All part of the snow, folks? Without the skeleton sled, Beetle’s armored body will have to surf-ice. Hurtling down the steep straightaways, even a buginner can reach speeds up to 80 eeks! or 130 yikes! per hour. Can the tiny yet mighty Beetle scarab the points for a win?

When it comes to the jump, Beetle’s natural flying talent can’t be eclipsed, but there’s no shedding that snowball. Oof. Will the extra-frosty finish affect the final score? Not in the slide-est, it seems!

Our antenna picked up this statement by the new six-legged sledder: “Wow-ee! If the skeleton were a fellow beetle, I’d write love letters full of hugs and kisses. Like, ‘Ex-oh ex-oh skeleton. You complete me.’”

Phew. After all the excitement of that wild slide, Beetle must be one pooped ‘roller.

Carnival (Greece) 2018

In Greece, the Carnival is a time for games, parades, and celebration. The Greek season of apokries, which literally translates to “no more meat,” refers to the time of Lent that Carnival precedes. The Carnival’s ten weeks of festivities also celebrate Dionysus, the Greek god of wine. Partygoers can participate in myriad events throughout the festival, from a treasure hunt to the burning of the carnival king.
Though Carnival has been celebrated for centuries (or longer!), its modern form is likely derived from a party held by a merchant named Moretis in 1829. As new cultures visited and left their marks on the Grecian islands, the celebration continued to change, leading to different versions of Carnival in different regions of the country.
Carnival ends on Clean Monday (Ash Monday), when Lent begins for those who observe.
May the season of apokries inspire you to celebrate life, Joy, and laughter!

Doodle Snow Games - Day 10

Welcome to Day 10 of the Doodle Snow Games! On this brrr-eezy day in PyeongChang, we're joined by athletes from all over the world hoping to prove themselves best in class (or species).
Let’s follow Magpie for a fluttering glimpse of today’s action…
With little gravity assistance or downslopes, cross-country skiing lacks hare-pin turns but tests the endurance of even the finest of athletes. Today’s race is a fabled competition between well-known rivals: Hare, game for anything and doesn’t cotton to crowds; and Tortoise, a veteran of these games for 188 years. Referee Mouse, outstanding in the field, flags the start. And they’re off!
Hare high-tails it down the parallel track and clocks in at 40 mph (64 km/h). Tortoise torques up to the land-speed of .17 mph (.27 km/h) with slow-and-steady determination. But while in the lead, Hare turns on a lucky rabbit’s foot, and doubles back on the track ski-less. This could be a hare-y situation…
Coming back into view, it’s looks like Tortoise is now a-head, by a nose! Hare, donning a shell-met and turtleneck, just took a leap of faith and teamed up with Tortoise for a very hoppy ending!

Doodle Snow Games - Day 9

Welcome to Day 9 of the Doodle Snow Games! On this brrr-eezy day in PyeongChang, we're joined by athletes from all over the world hoping to prove themselves best in class (or species).

Let’s follow Magpie for a fluttering glimpse of today’s action…

We’re inside the rink now for a look at today's ice hockey match-up. It's crane-on-crane, and these avian foes are already on thin ice as they meet in the middle for the faceoff. A whistle from the ref breaks the ice and the game has begun. These cranes are unflappable as they fly from one side of the rink to the other, but can they net their dreams just by winging it?
Wait...there's something fishy going on here…in an unexpected turn of events, the puck has dropped through the ice! The clock is frozen while the cranes figure out what to do next. Suddenly, a noise from beneath, and a friendly fish out of water comes up with a splash to return the puck!
Folks, this game has truly reached new depths of cross-species cooperation! Who needs competition when you've got teamwork?

Lithuania Independence Day 2018

Today marks the 100th anniversary of Lithuania's independence, achieved with the signing of “The Act of Reinstating Independence of Lithuania.” Though this initial freedom lasted just twenty-two years, it remains Lithuania’s primary celebration of sovereignty. In fact, when Lithuania separated from the Soviet Union in 1990, the country asserted that the Act had never lapsed, and the nation was simply restoring its original state of independence.
Today’s Doodle depicts the Lithuanian flag alongside a stylized version of the original February 16th Act of Independence, a handwritten document lost for more than 70 years and only re-discovered in 2017, to the great delight of the people of Lithuania.
Happy Independence Day, Lithuania!
