Georges Lemaître’s 124th Birthday

Most people have heard of the Big Bang theory, but fewer recognize the name Georges Lemaitre, the man who came up with the hypothesis that transformed our understanding of astrophysics. Born on this day in 1894, Georges Lemaitre was a Belgian Catholic Priest who proposed that the universe began as a single primordial atom, which he referred to as the Cosmic Egg. Although his thesis was based on calculations derived from Einstein’s theory of General Relativity, Einstein initially dismissed Lemaitre’s work, remarking, "Your calculations are correct, but your Physics is atrocious." Two years later Einstein changed his mind.
Lemaitres 1927 paper theorizing that the universe was expanding was soon substantiated by Edwin Hubble’s observations, which were published in 1929. Trained in physics at Cambridge, Harvard and MIT, Lemaitre accurately estimated the numerical value that astronomers would come to call the Hubble constant, a unit of measurement that describes the universe’s rate of expansion. Compared to Lemaitre’s small scientific readership in Belgium, Hubble’s work received much wider circulation. As a result Hubble’s name is more often associated with the Big Bang, which birthed a whole new branch of science known as relativistic cosmology.
Still Lemaitre was not completely overlooked in his day. In 1934 he received the prestigious Francqui prize, the highest scientific accolade in Belgium—one of his nominators was Einstein. Several other international scientific awards honored Lemaitre’s legacy, and a crater on the moon was named for him in 1970.
Today’s animated Doodle depicts Lemaitre within the constantly expanding universe that he first envisioned, surrounded by galaxies expanding outward just as he said they would.
Happy Birthday Georges Lemaitre!

Celebrating World Cup 2018 Champions: France!

Congratulations to the 2018 FIFA World Cup champions: France! 🇫🇷
Over the past month, players from the men's national teams of 32 countries competed for top rank across 12 venues in 11 cities across Russia. With a total of 64 matches (and plenty of GOOOALS!), the games have culminated at Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow, where the French national team has won to become the 2018 World Cup champions.
This year's Doodle series celebrated the rich cultures and talent of all 32 participating countries by featuring guest artists hailing from each nation. We hope you've enjoyed all 32 Doodles throughout the games, each illustrating the artist's interpretation of, "What ⚽ looks like in my country."
Today's Doodle is a unique creation by our very own French Doodler, Helene Leroux, depicting, "What World Cup victory looks like in my country!"
Cheers to all the talented players around the world. See you next time!

Q&A with today's featured artist: Helene Leroux

Q: How does it feel for you and your fellow French peers to have won the 2018 World Cup?
A:  It's super exciting of course!! It's also nice that it's happening 20 years after our first World Cup victory in 1998! I love that it brings French people closer together to share that moment of joy. Being away from France at the moment, it allows me to be a bit closer to my country in a way ;)

Q: What does your celebration Doodle depict & what inspired the elements you chose to include in it?
A: I had to represent the rooster, of course, which is the symbol of France and French football! He is running and jumping on a spinning football, which can be associated with the world spinning.
I wanted to also depict the Arc de Triomphe of Paris, which was very symbolic during the victory of 1998 as they projected images of the football players of the team right after they won.
And I wanted to use only the colors of the French flag: blue, white, and red!

Q: What do you hope people feel or take away from your Doodle?
A: I really want to give a sense of celebration in the Doodle, and hope it will make people want to party and pay tribute to the team's achievements!

Q: How will you celebrate the big win!?
A: I'm in San Francisco and the game is shown early in the morning, so I guess I have all day to go around the city to find all the French spots and French peers to celebrate with ;)

Bastille Day 2018

Although La Fête Nationale — or Bastille Day as it’s known in English-speaking countries — hearkens back to the dawn of the French Revolution, it’s fundamentally a celebration of culture. At this time each year, French people around the globe, from Nice to New Orleans, honor their heritage and pay homage to those who fought for the principles of Liberté, Egalité, and Fraternité (liberty, equality, fraternity).
In Paris, crowds gather along the Avenue des Champs-Élysées to enjoy parades, heading to the Eiffel Tower for fireworks and live music later on. In Marseille, the Vieux Port plays host to two days of festivities. Wherever the celebration takes place, you’ll surely hear the French national anthem, “La Marseillaise,” resounding throughout the streets.
Seen on church bell towers since the Middle Ages, the French rooster, or Coq Gaulois, also appeared on French flags during the revolution of 1789. The bird that crows at dawn has come to symbolize vigilance as well as the people of France. In today’s Doodle a procession of blue, white, and red hens and roosters enjoy a Bastille Day parade.
Bonne Fête Nationale!

England – Celyn Brazier
Q: What does ⚽ mean in your country?
A: It is a quintessentially English national event that is tinged with excitement and frustration and tragedy in equal measure. At its best it represents people of many backgrounds and ethnicities coming together in dark, sweaty pubs while it is hot and sunny outside.
