Doodle Snow Games - Day 7

Welcome to Day 7 of the Doodle Snow Games! On this brrr-eezy day in PyeongChang, we're joined by athletes from all over the world hoping to prove themselves best in class (or species).

Let’s follow Magpie to the lake for a fluttering glimpse of today’s action...

We’re down by the water today for the biathlon, otherwise known as the spit-n-swim. This year’s favorite, Archerfish, has their eyes on the flies and is aiming to win.

“Talent swims in my family,” Archer said earlier. “All of my 127 siblings are sharkshooters, too.”

Earlier today, rivals Perch and Bass came within spitting distance of first place, but ultimately floundered. None of the other competitors had the skill to even bug the judges, which will tip the scales in this fish’s favor.

One-two-three-four—unbelievable! Archerfish zaps all five targets with fin-point accuracy! We nearly did a spit-take, folks.

Doodle Snow Games - Day 6 - Valentine's Day

Day 6 of the Doodle Snow Games & Happy Valentine's Day!

Welcome to Day 6 of the Doodle Snow Games and a very Happy Valentine’s Day to many around the world! On this brrr-eezy day in PyeongChang, we're joined by athletes from all over the world hoping to prove themselves best in class (or species).

Let’s follow Magpie to the ice for a fluttering glimpse of today’s heartwarming action...

Today's couples figure skating competitors, the Grebes, show us just how powerful love can be. The two lovebirds have been skating together since they were chicks, but today they truly spread their wings.

A birds-eye-view of the action displays eggstravagant jumps and lifts; the Grebes must be flying high in the moment. They appear to be winging it, as one Grebe ducks under the other. The crowd's got goosebumps - they've never seen anything so beautiful! They all watch over the Grebes like hawks as the couple appears to be going for the never-before-seen wing-to-wing lift--will they make it?...

Yes folks, it looks like these great Grebes grab glory today! Birds of a feather skate together, and these graceful Grebes have shown that two can be even better than one.

Carnival 2018

Extravagant handcrafted costumes. The captivating rhythm of music from trios elétricos. Millions of party-goers dancing in the streets. It’s time for Carnival 2018!
Marking the beginning of Lent, Carnival is a week-long celebration full of lively parades, vibrant attire, and elaborate music and dance routines. Although observed all over the world, Carnival is especially popular in Brazil. In fact, Rio de Janeiro is home to the largest such celebration in the world, with up to 2 million participants!
The city is also considered the birthplace of Samba, which today is nearly synonymous with Rio’s Carnival. Music and dance play a vital role in the festivities all over the country, and popular genres vary by region — from Forró in Brazil’s Northeast to Axé in Bahia to Frevo in Pernambuco. Irrespective of town, time, or even the number of people swaying to the music, rich and catchy beats pulse through every part of Brazil on this happy occasion!

Rosenmontag 2018

Floats and candies and costumes, oh my!

While Carnival is observed by countries all across the world, celebrations in Germany are marked by delightful traditions, and take on different names in different parts of the country.

For Karneval celebrators in Rhineland, the Rosenmontag (Rose Monday) parade takes center stage on the Monday before Ash Wednesday. Every town hosts a parade complete with floats and candy-tossing, while participants dress up in Funkenmariechen (traditional costumes). Shouts of "Alaaf!" (the fool’s call, which translates roughly to “may he live well” and "Helau!"(a call representing the fun of joy) fill the streets until Veilchendienstag, (Violet Tuesday) the next day.

In Berlin, Brandenburg or Saxony, Fasching celebrations take a similar form, but begin in earnest on Schmutziger Donnerstag, or ‘Fat Thursday’. In southwestern Germany and northern Bavaria, you may find yourself celebrating Fastnacht, sporting elaborately carved masks depicting witches and other animals in the wild.
