Doodle Snow Games - Day 4

Welcome to Day 4 of the Doodle Snow Games! On this brrr-eezy day in PyeongChang, we're joined by athletes from all over the world hoping to prove themselves best in class (or species).
Let’s follow Magpie for a fluttering glimpse of today’s action...
Today’s athletes are ready to shred! Right out of the gate, the snowboarders carve through the pow’. Elephant leads the herd off the first jump with Bear tailing, a surprise contender considering the boarder woke from a months-long nap just this morning! Cat has clawed into third position with Armadillo shelling out sick moves just behind. Flying Squirrel catches air, gliding just past Penguin, who slides into the sixth position. Can Elephant extend a small advantage into a mammoth lead?
The world is watching to see who emerges as leader of the pack.
Stop by every day for the next few weeks to keep up with all the action from the Doodle Snow Games!

Doodle Snow Games - Day 3

Welcome to Day 3 of the Doodle Snow Games! On this brrr-eezy day in PyeongChang, we're joined by athletes from all over the world hoping to prove themselves best in class (or species).
Let’s follow Magpie to the slopes for a fluttering glimpse of today’s action…

With such fierce competition, there's snow telling who will take the lead today. The anticipation is un-bear-able as Polar Bear makes a pole-less run through the gates at top speed, clawing a path to the number-one spot. Deftly bear-reling down the slope, Polar Bear quipped, “Whew! It’s all downhill from here!
After a stealthy win on the mountain, Polar Bear’s infectious glee can’t be camouflaged.

Doodle Snow Games - Day 2

Welcome to Day 2 of the Doodle Snow Games! On this brrr-eezy day in PyeongChang, we're joined by athletes from all over the world hoping to prove themselves best in class (or species).
Let’s follow Magpie into the rink for a fluttering glimpse of today’s action...
After a slow start in these games, Turtle is determined to curl with the best of them. This amateur turned profe-shell-nel athlete has stepped into the rink sporting a stone-y look of concentration.
We broke the ice with Turtle earlier. “I put my own spin on a classic technique. To take home a win, I just have to stick my neck out — then pull it back in and find a place on the mantle.”
The question is, will that kind of confidence help or herp? Can this slow but steady competitor polish off their rivals to achieve turtle domination over the sport? It’s important to remember, there’s no broom for error in this event. Even the slightest slip-up can plunge you into watery defeat.
...Amazing! Turtle just swept away the competition to slide into first place!

Doodle Snow Games - Day 1

Welcome to the opening day of the Doodle Snow Games! On this brrr-eezy day in PyeongChang, we're joined by athletes from all over the world hoping to prove themselves best in class (or species).
Let’s follow Magpie into the stadium for a fluttering glimpse of today’s action...
It looks like the whole animal kingdom has turned out to watch the excitement unfold over the next two weeks! Who will be leaping, crawling, or slithering home a hero? Will Snake shed the runner-up title and land the first ever single-footed triple-axel? Will Dog collar the win on the ruff slopes? Will Penguin's webbed feats earn the audience's affection or face an icy reception?
One thing's for sure: the journey alone is a wild opportunity for most of these koala-fied critters! Big or small, win or lose, new friendships are bound to crystallize before the end of the games.
Stop by every day for the next few weeks to keep up with all the action from the Doodle Snow Games!

Paula Modersohn-Becker’s 142nd Birthday

Renowned German expressionist painter Paula Modersohn-Becker was born on this day in 1876. Her art bears witness to her courage, boldness, and ambition — a temperament that greatly influenced her short but prolific career.
Exposed to the intellectual world from the time she was a young child growing up in Dresden-Friedrichstadt, Modersohn-Becker began her artistic endeavors as a student in Bremen, and at the age of 18, moved to an artist’s colony in Worpswede. There she met her future husband, but hungry to learn more, she moved to Paris to study and urged him to join her.
In the years that followed, her personal life underwent many changes. But through all the turbulence, she continued to paint, producing more than 80 pictures in 1906 alone. Her writings explain this frenetic pace as a necessity to make up for the first two ‘lost’ decades of her life.
An early expressionist, she joined the likes of Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse in introducing modernism to the world. Modersohn-Becker was known for her bold choices as an artist — be it her depictions of nude female figures (among the very first women artists to do so), or those of women breastfeeding their children. She tenaciously resisted the strict expectations held of women of her era, preferring exploration and painting over more traditional pastimes.
Today’s Doodle reflects her artistic style depicting domestic subjects, and is illustrated by Berlin-based duo Golden Cosmos.
Happy Birthday, Paula Modersohn-Becker!

Aysel Gürel’s 89th Birthday

There will never be another Aysel Gürel.
Born on this day in 1929, in Sarayköy in the Denizli Province of Turkey, Aysel Gürel lived life to the hilt.
Buoyant and daring, Gürel ruled the Turkish pop music scene from the late 1970s through the 2000s, penning lyrics about love lost and found for both legendary singers as well as up-and-comers including Sezen Aksu, Nilüfer, Tarkan and Sertab Erener.
New songs are produced from the trove of lyrics she left behind even today!
At heart, Gürel was a poet who found her audience through her songs, but she was also a gifted actress, Turkologist, and witty provocateur.
She also made her mark as a feminist and animal rights activist.
While stars gave voice to her songs, Gürel wasn’t one to hide in the background.
She, too, was made for the limelight.
Dressed in her oversized red glasses, pink wigs and head-turning outfits, flirting, and always quick with clever repartee, Gürel was as unforgettable as she was unpredictable.
Today’s Doodle celebrates Gürel’s inner (and outer) wild child.
Wearing those signature specs, her hair colored in hues of fuschia, her joy is hard to contain on the screen.

Happy 89th birthday, Aysel Gürel!
