María Rebecca Latigo de Hernández’s 122nd Birthday

29.07.2018-Sunday-ஞாயிறு-Doodle-María Rebecca Latigo de Hernández’s 122nd Birthday-PNG.
Today’s Doodle celebrates what would have been the 122nd birthday of María Rebecca Latigo de Hernández, a civil rights leader integral to advancing Mexican American and Mexican immigrant rights.

Born in Garza García, near Monterrey, Mexico in 1896, Hernández later immigrated to San Antonio, Texas, where she became one of the leading voices speaking against economic discrimination and educational segregation that was faced primarily by women and children of Mexican descent. Among her many contributions, she co-founded the Orden Caballeros de America (Order of the Knights of America) - a benefit society dedicated to educating Mexican Americans about their rights. She also helped organize the Asociación Protectora de Madres (Association for the Protection of Mothers) which provided financial aid to expectant mothers and La Liga de Defensa Pro-Escolar (The School Defense League) which fought to replace segregated educational facilities.

In addition to being a powerful organizer, Hernández was also a talented orator: she became San Antonio’s first Mexican American female radio announcer, and spent much of the rest of her life speaking up against injustice and inequality across both the Mexican and African American communities.

Today’s Doodle illustrates Hernández doing what she did best – using her voice to elevate and benefit her community.

Happy 122nd birthday, María Rebecca Latigo de Hernández!

Peru National Day 2018

28.07.2018-Saturday-சனி-Doodle-Peru National Day 2018-GIF.
On July 28th, people from around Peru start their celebrations for las Fiestas Patrias - one of the biggest national holidays in the country, and also Peru's National Day. People take the streets and Plazas de Armas to celebrate the liberation of Peru from Spain, in 1821.

The main event is a speech held by the president, which goes over the state of the nation and is followed by a mass led by the Archbishop of Lima. The capital also hosts a celebration of its own, with a flag-raising ceremony and parades taking the streets.

Today's Doodle depicts the Peruvian flag, with its red and white stripes and coat of arms featuring important symbols of Peru: its national animal the vicuña, a cinchona tree representing the national flora, and a cornucopia representing its mineral resources and prosperity.

Happy national day, Peru!

Lyudmila Rudenko’s 114th Birthday

On this day in 1904, one of the world’s most influential chess players was born in Lubny, Ukraine. Twenty-four years later, Lyudmila Rudenko achieved the first major check(mate) in her storied career when she won the 1928 Moscow Women’s Championship. This championship was just one of the many prestigious titles she’d earn in her lifetime. As an International Master in the World Chess Federation (FIDE) and later Woman Grandmaster, Rudenko made a career paving the way for women to come. Rudenko was first introduced to chess by her father at just ten years old. Initially interested in swimming, she placed first at a local competition in Odessa, Ukraine in the 400-meter breaststroke before moving to Moscow in 1925 and refining her gift for chess. In 1950, Rudenko became the second woman ever to win the Women’s World Chess Championship—a title she held until 1953. In 2015, she was inducted into the World Chess Hall of Fame. In fact, despite her major accomplishments in the game, she considered her life’s most important achievement to be organizing the evacuation of children during the Siege of Leningrad in World War II. Today’s Doodle—which draws artistic inspiration from 1960s graphic art and posters—reimagines a focused Rudenko’s determination during the world championship game. On what would’ve been her 114th birthday, we honor Rudenko’s achievements both on and off the board. Cднем рождения, Lyudmila!

Belgium National Day 2018

Today is Belgium National Day!
July 21st commemorates Belgium’s anniversary of independence and is the perfect occasion to celebrate Belgian culture and food.
Our Doodle features one of Belgium’s most distinctly delectable treats - the waffle! Depending on where you find yourself in Belgium, you’ll be treated to different types of waffles. In Brussels, waffles are traditionally rectangular and have deep, square pockets throughout. These waffles are typically light and crispy, and might be dusted with powdered sugar or topped with whipped cream and fruit. Should you order a waffle in Liege, you’ll be treated to a thicker waffle made of a dough similar to bread. The waffle may be rounder and have uneven edges, a signature of this style. Both waffles are a delicious treat and an excellent way to celebrate the holiday!
Whether in Brussels or Liege, or even at home whipping up homemade treats from family recipes passed down through generations, Belgians everywhere take today to celebrate their heritage and partake in the festivities.
Happy National Day, Belgium!

Colombia Independence Day 2018

When the Republic of Colombia celebrates its independence, festivities take place all over the world. In the 208 years since the former Spanish colony became a sovereign state, the occasion has been observed in Colombian cities like Bogotá and Medellín and worldwide Colombian communities in Miami, Los Angeles, London, Melbourne, and beyond.
On July 20,1810 the formation of the Junta de Santa Fe in Bogotá sowed the seeds of a movement that led to Colombia becoming the first constitutional government in South America. According to a popular children’s song, the yellow in Colombia’s national flag (depicted in today’s Doodle) represents Colombia’s gold, the blue its two oceans (Caribbean and Pacific), and the red the valor and sacrifice of those who battled for freedom.
From urban centers in the Andes mountains to smaller coastal villages, schools and businesses close today as proud citizens gather to watch parades with patriotic flair. At home with family and friends, Colombians everywhere take time out to enjoy some traditional cumbia and champeta music while eating national delicacies like tamales and bandeja paisaa hearty breakfast of beans, white rice, chorizo, chicharrón, carne en polvo, fried egg, ripe plantain and avocado.

Mehdi Hassan’s 91st Birthday

Born on this day in 1927 into a family of teachers and musicians, Mehdi Hassan sang all his life. Both his father and uncle were accomplished vocalists from whom he learned India’s classical dhrupad and khyal music. Growing up in the Rajasthani village of Luna, he fell in love with traditional folk music as well.
When his family moved to the newly partitioned nation of Pakistan in 1947, Hassan supported himself as a mechanic. When he wasn’t fixing bicycles and cars he always made time to practice even when he did not perform in public. In 1952 he appeared on Radio Pakistan, singing classical thumri music and four years later he recorded his first playback song for the movies. Hits like Patta patta, boota boota won him fans in both India and Pakistan.
His specialty was the ghazal, an ancient poetic form favored by Rumi and other masters of Urdu verse. Known as Shaenshah-e-Ghazal or King of Ghazal, Hassan recorded thousands of songs and his voice appeared in over 300 films. Throughout the 1970s he was named Best Playback Singer at Pakistan’s Nigar Awards year after year, and he earned numerous other awards including Pride of Performance from the governments of India and Nepal.
Hassan’s spellbinding songs of love and longing brought ghazal to the world. His work with Faiz Ahmed Faiz, particularly Gulon main rang bhara (or let the blossoms fill with color) will stand the test of time.
Happy Birthday Mehdi Hassan, King of Ghazal!

Kurt Masur’s 91st Birthday

Today’s Doodle celebrates Maestro Kurt Masur, world-renowned German conductor and humanitarian.
Born in the Prussian town of Brieg (now in Poland), Masur studied music and trained as a pianist, organist, cellist, and percussionist in East Germany. A damaged tendon in his right hand at the age of 16 ended his playing career, but propelled Masur to concentrate on conducting.
Beyond numerous musical distinctions and titles, Mazur received global cultural and humanitarian honors including Grand Officer of the Legion of Honor from the French government, New York City Cultural Ambassador, Commander Cross of Merit of the Polish Republic, Honorary Citizen of Brieg, the Leo Baeck Medal for promoting tolerance and social justice, and a Goldene Henne award for public policy work.
The maestro is remembered for his belief in the power of music to “bring humanity closer together,” especially when he led the New York Philharmonic in a performance of Brahm’s German Requiem in a nationally televised memorial for the 9/11 attacks.
Masur was instrumental in leading worldwide orchestras and orchestrating peace around the world. Today’s Doodle depicts the maestro’s robust conducting style, notably baton-less due to his childhood hand injury.
Happy 91st birthday, Maestro!

Gino Bartali’s 104th Birthday

For most cyclists, winning a major race like the Tour de France or the Giro dItalia would represent the crowning achievement of an athletic career. For champion road cyclist Gino Bartali, winning both of these competitions—thrice and twice, respectively—was just part of his legacy as both an athlete and humanitarian.
Born in Florence on this day  in 1914, Bartali used his celebrity and his skill as a cyclist to help people under threat of deportation or worse. Having started competitive cycling at age 13, he won more than 180 races, making Bartali a local hero throughout the 1930s and 1940s. As a result he was able to ride through the Tuscan and Umbrian countryside undisturbed by wartime officials. Given this cover, he concealed documents in his bike’s handlebars, sometimes delivering photographs of Jews who needed forged identity cards to save their lives. He continued this work even after being questioned and threatened by Mussolini’s government agents.
It wasn’t until 2003 that stories began to emerge about his quiet heroism during the war, which included hiding a Jewish family in his basement. Risking his own freedom and safety to protect others, Bartali turned his sport into a race to save lives..
Buon compleanno Gino Bartali!

Georges Lemaître’s 124th Birthday

Most people have heard of the Big Bang theory, but fewer recognize the name Georges Lemaitre, the man who came up with the hypothesis that transformed our understanding of astrophysics. Born on this day in 1894, Georges Lemaitre was a Belgian Catholic Priest who proposed that the universe began as a single primordial atom, which he referred to as the Cosmic Egg. Although his thesis was based on calculations derived from Einstein’s theory of General Relativity, Einstein initially dismissed Lemaitre’s work, remarking, "Your calculations are correct, but your Physics is atrocious." Two years later Einstein changed his mind.
Lemaitres 1927 paper theorizing that the universe was expanding was soon substantiated by Edwin Hubble’s observations, which were published in 1929. Trained in physics at Cambridge, Harvard and MIT, Lemaitre accurately estimated the numerical value that astronomers would come to call the Hubble constant, a unit of measurement that describes the universe’s rate of expansion. Compared to Lemaitre’s small scientific readership in Belgium, Hubble’s work received much wider circulation. As a result Hubble’s name is more often associated with the Big Bang, which birthed a whole new branch of science known as relativistic cosmology.
Still Lemaitre was not completely overlooked in his day. In 1934 he received the prestigious Francqui prize, the highest scientific accolade in Belgium—one of his nominators was Einstein. Several other international scientific awards honored Lemaitre’s legacy, and a crater on the moon was named for him in 1970.
Today’s animated Doodle depicts Lemaitre within the constantly expanding universe that he first envisioned, surrounded by galaxies expanding outward just as he said they would.
Happy Birthday Georges Lemaitre!

Celebrating World Cup 2018 Champions: France!

Congratulations to the 2018 FIFA World Cup champions: France! 🇫🇷
Over the past month, players from the men's national teams of 32 countries competed for top rank across 12 venues in 11 cities across Russia. With a total of 64 matches (and plenty of GOOOALS!), the games have culminated at Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow, where the French national team has won to become the 2018 World Cup champions.
This year's Doodle series celebrated the rich cultures and talent of all 32 participating countries by featuring guest artists hailing from each nation. We hope you've enjoyed all 32 Doodles throughout the games, each illustrating the artist's interpretation of, "What ⚽ looks like in my country."
Today's Doodle is a unique creation by our very own French Doodler, Helene Leroux, depicting, "What World Cup victory looks like in my country!"
Cheers to all the talented players around the world. See you next time!

Q&A with today's featured artist: Helene Leroux

Q: How does it feel for you and your fellow French peers to have won the 2018 World Cup?
A:  It's super exciting of course!! It's also nice that it's happening 20 years after our first World Cup victory in 1998! I love that it brings French people closer together to share that moment of joy. Being away from France at the moment, it allows me to be a bit closer to my country in a way ;)

Q: What does your celebration Doodle depict & what inspired the elements you chose to include in it?
A: I had to represent the rooster, of course, which is the symbol of France and French football! He is running and jumping on a spinning football, which can be associated with the world spinning.
I wanted to also depict the Arc de Triomphe of Paris, which was very symbolic during the victory of 1998 as they projected images of the football players of the team right after they won.
And I wanted to use only the colors of the French flag: blue, white, and red!

Q: What do you hope people feel or take away from your Doodle?
A: I really want to give a sense of celebration in the Doodle, and hope it will make people want to party and pay tribute to the team's achievements!

Q: How will you celebrate the big win!?
A: I'm in San Francisco and the game is shown early in the morning, so I guess I have all day to go around the city to find all the French spots and French peers to celebrate with ;)

Bastille Day 2018

Although La Fête Nationale — or Bastille Day as it’s known in English-speaking countries — hearkens back to the dawn of the French Revolution, it’s fundamentally a celebration of culture. At this time each year, French people around the globe, from Nice to New Orleans, honor their heritage and pay homage to those who fought for the principles of Liberté, Egalité, and Fraternité (liberty, equality, fraternity).
In Paris, crowds gather along the Avenue des Champs-Élysées to enjoy parades, heading to the Eiffel Tower for fireworks and live music later on. In Marseille, the Vieux Port plays host to two days of festivities. Wherever the celebration takes place, you’ll surely hear the French national anthem, “La Marseillaise,” resounding throughout the streets.
Seen on church bell towers since the Middle Ages, the French rooster, or Coq Gaulois, also appeared on French flags during the revolution of 1789. The bird that crows at dawn has come to symbolize vigilance as well as the people of France. In today’s Doodle a procession of blue, white, and red hens and roosters enjoy a Bastille Day parade.
Bonne Fête Nationale!

Q: What does ⚽ mean in your country?
A: It is a quintessentially English national event that is tinged with excitement and frustration and tragedy in equal measure. At its best it represents people of many backgrounds and ethnicities coming together in dark, sweaty pubs while it is hot and sunny outside.
