Celebrating May Ayim

Today’s (27.02.2018) Doodle celebrates author, poet, and activist May Ayim. It was on this (27.02.2018) date in 2010 that "May Ayim Ufer" or "May Ayim Street" was named in her honor in Berlin.
Born in 1960 to a Ghanaian father and a German mother, Ayim drew inspiration from a difficult childhood to become a prominent figure in the Black German movement.
Ayim’s pioneering work helped lay the groundwork for the field of Black German history. Her 1986 thesis, “Afro-Germans: Their Cultural and Social History on the Background of Social Change,” was the first scholarly work on Afro-German history from the Middle Ages to the present. This thesis also provided the foundation of her renowned book, “Farbe Bekennen.” In addition to her scholarly publications, Ayim’s poetry collections brought the Black German struggle for equality to an international stage.
Ayim’s journey as an author and poet also intersected with her work as an activist. For example, she partnered with other activists to form the Initiative Schwarze Deutsche (ISD), which served as a network of Blacks in Germany striving for self-empowerment.
Ayim’s 1992 speech, “My Pen Is My Sword: Racism and Resistance in Germany,” stressed the importance of writing as a vehicle for social transformation. Today's (27.02.2018) Doodle by Berlin-based illustrator Laura Breiling celebrates Ayim’s scholarly and literary work, which continues to educate and inspire people across the globe.

Kuwait National Day 2018

As Kuwaitis take today to celebrate National Day, the people and cities come to life to honor what makes their home special. The past few decades have woven modern art, theater, and music into a unique, rich culture. In celebration of the holiday, you’ll likely hear the urban sounds of sawt, a music genre born in Kuwait, ringing through the streets. Sawt is made from ‘ud, a lute, miras, drums, and violins to create an authentically Kuwaiti sound. You’ll also find that parades, light shows and concerts are all traditionally part of the National Day celebration.
Today’s Doodle features the national flag waving proudly. You’ll find flags flying across the country today as Kuwaitis show their pride for their homeland.
Happy National Day!

Doodle Snow Games - Day 17

Welcome to the final day of the Doodle Snow Games! On this brrr-eezy night in PyeongChang, we're joined by athletes from all over the world who have done their best to prove themselves best in class (or species).
Let’s perch with Magpie and watch over the closing ceremony
The Doodle Snow Games wrap up tonight under the moonlight, with cooing and barking heard across the mountain as our tuckered-out athletes and fans enjoy their last evening together.
We've seen crowing over victories and sympathetic hissing over defeats. Through it all, we've seen the animal kingdom celebrate their strengths and play mice together. Lions have become the pride of their hometowns, birds have flocked to see each other on the ice, and millipedes have plodded to PyeongChang to race with the best of them.
Now that we're at the tail-end of the Games, and the final finish-line has been crossed, everybody takes a much needed break to enjoy the fireworks and their new friendships.
Thanks for joining in all the fur-raising excitement over the last few weeks. See you next time, our fine-feathered friends!

Estonia Independence Day 2018

In February 1918, the Republic of Estonia proclaimed its independence from the Soviet Union, a powerful and symbolic act that became etched in the collective memories of the Estonian people. Today, a hundred years from that historic date, Estonia is celebrating this much-anticipated anniversary with a bang. At sunrise, the nation’s flag will be hoisted at Hermanni Tower in the capital city of Tallinn. Celebrations will continue with a military parade at Freedom Square in Tallinn and an evening reception at the Estonian National Museum (ERM) in Tartu, Estonia’s second biggest city.
Today’s Doodle of a waving flag captures the excitement and pride of the Estonian nation. The flag’s origins date back to 1881, while its colors are rooted in the country’s history, natural life, and treasured traditions. Blue symbolizes faith as well as the sky; black represents the soil or jackets worn by Estonian peasants of yore, and white signifies hope or pure white snow.
Let the centenary celebrations begin!
Happy National Day, Estonia!

Doodle Snow Games - Day 16

Welcome to Day 16 of the Doodle Snow Games! On this brrr-eezy day in PyeongChang, we're joined by athletes from all over the world hoping to prove themselves best in class (or species)

Let’s follow Magpie into the rink for a fluttering glimpse of today’s action
Octopus dominates the free skate program today, playing to an enthusiastic corral of sea-fans. Facing stiff competition, Octo attempts the world’s first double-quad and lands swimmingly, changing the tide of figure skating forever.
While the adoring afish-ionados in the crowd do the Wave, the judges get Kraken on adding up points for the technical feet. Giant Squid awards Octopus a perfect eight out of eight, but Gator siphons off a point.
Asked about the perfect mark, Giant Squid says, Gill-ty as charged, I’m a sucker for jet propulsion!

Even with the range of scores, Octopus picks up another shiny win!

Stop by tomorrow to catch the final action as we wrap up the Doodle Snow Games!

Doodle Snow Games - Day 15

Welcome to Day 15 of the Doodle Snow Games! On this brrr-eezy day in PyeongChang, we're joined by athletes from all over the world hoping to prove themselves best in class (or species).

Let’s follow Magpie for a fluttering glimpse of today’s action
We've got all our ducks in a row today for the highly anticipated bobsled event. These birds have been logging time on the mountain for the past few weeks in preparation for this webbed feat. Waddle this team do in the sled? Will they fit the bill as they bob and weave down the hill or will they quack under the pressure?
The ducks were on track for a win, but it looks as though the old expression holds true today: if it walks like a duck and talks like a duck...it may not be a bobsled star. The pipe dream of victory was a slippery slope for this crew. They swam against the current, but in the end they were sunk.
Better luck nest time, team!
Stop by for the next couple of days to catch the last bit of action from the Doodle Snow Games!

Doodle Snow Games - Day 14

Welcome to Day 14 of the Doodle Snow Games! On this brrr-eezy day in PyeongChang, we're joined by athletes from all over the world hoping to prove themselves best in class (or species).
Let’s follow Magpie for a fluttering glimpse of today’s action...
Today’s hockey match pits Squirrel against Chipmunk in a friendly battle between furry cousins. Chipmunk scurries out onto the ice in their traditional striped uniform looking bright-eyed and bushy-tailed. Can Squirrel bury the competition and get the gold?
The ref drops the acorn and the game is on. Squirrel wins the faceoff and cracks a big slapshot, sending the puck soaring towards the net. Chipmunk easily gobbles up the shot, taunting the competition with a cheeky smirk. The crowd goes nuts!
Stop by for the next couple of days to catch the remaining action from the Doodle Snow Games!
